Robots vs. Humans

April 2, 2008

Technology is evolving, and the use of artificial intelligence is increasing. From robotic cleaners, to virtual pets - these “robots” are here to stay.

Even in stores, the use of electronic check-out kiosks have been seen in various locations. But is this new technology a positive or negative change in our industry?

If we let the “robots” do everything for us, then wouldn’t we become a very lazy, unproductive society? Or would we just have more time to do more things that we really enjoy?

It can be seen both ways - for instance many people prefer the human interaction when in a store - and checking out using electronic means is not as entertaining. Secondly, the “robots” might mess up and there could be many technical issues.

In K-Mart a few years ago, they replaced most of the “human checkouts” with electronic ones, and it failed - miserably. The people shopping at this store were mainly older individuals, inexperienced with using this new technology.

Secondly, the machines broke down pretty quickly, and thus K-Mart returned back to the humans.

This is how I would like it to be - at least in a store. I want to have that human interaction - someone smiling at me and saying hello.

Having a robotic cleaner is just an accessory for your personal needs - and previous cleaners were lifeless as well.

There is a huge difference between cleaners and electronic check-outs, and for the most part, the day my vacuum cleaner smiles and says hello is the day I hope there will be world peace ^_^
